When Didi and Betty catch the gang cooped up inside the house on a beautiful summer day, the last place they want the kids to be is inside watching TV. It just so happens that Grandpa Lou's old pal, Red, is in town. Red is a rancher and a regular old cowboy. Seeing the kids as they are, he doesn't think they would last even a week out on his ranch. Tommy thinks he could last a week, while the rest of the gang aren't the least bit enthused about ranching life. Much to the gang's dismay, they're headed out to Red's ranch for a week, and they feel a bit miffed at Tommy for being the one to say he could last a week. Their first day on the ranch is nothing but hard work, but things gradually get better as the days go by.

Taking Tommy's pep talk to heart, Susie, Kimi, and Dil valiantly shovel up the manure.

Little Red notices Angelica's shiny hair and wonders how she got it that way. Angelica replies, "we bathe."

Lil is totally grossed out at the thought of shoveling horse manure. She says it would ruin the look of her jeans.
However, Tommy gets everyone shoveling by stating "you have to work before you earn the reward" (which is riding horses).
Needless to say, Tommy's attempt in putting up a fence post failed, leaving Chuckie wrapped up in barbed wire.

Big Red informs the 'Rats about the drive he's taking them on at the end of the week, leaving Phil ecstatic.
It's the first day the gang spends with the horses - and wouldn't you know? They look pretty similar to the 'Rats.

Chuckie develops an instant bond with his horse while Tommy gets off to a slow start with his horse.
Tommy climbs the horse backwards, leaving Phil, Lil, and Kimi chuckling at his expense.
